Product Spotlight - Stronghold for Dogs

Stronghold for dogs protects canines against both internal and external parasites, including fleas, ear mites, sarcoptic mange and flea allergy dermatitis.

Its active ingredient, selamectin, will kill adult fleas, along with their eggs and larvae that reside in the dog's environment, making it an effective treatment for dogs that have a flea problem.

Manufactured by Pfizer, the world's largest research-based pharmaceutical company, Stronghold is bought as packs of tubes containing a spot-on (cutaneous) applicator, containing from 15mg to 240mg of the selamectin for different sizes of dogs:

  • ≤ 2.5 kg - 1 tube of Stronghold 15 mg (Rose coloured top)
  • 2.6 – 5.0 kg - 1 tube of Stronghold 30 mg (Violet coloured top)
  • 5.1 – 10.0 kg - 1 tube of Stronghold 60 mg (Brown coloured top)
  • 10.1 – 20.0 kg - 1 tube of Stronghold 120 mg (Red coloured top)
  • 20.1 – 40.0 kg - 1 tube of Stronghold 240 mg (Green coloured top)
  • > 40.0 kg - Appropriate combination of tubes

How Stronghold Works

Following treatment of Stronghold, eggs and larvae are killed, stopping flea production and breaking the lifecycle of the flea.

Through its ovicidal and larvicidal action, Stronghold for dogs controls and treats adult intestinal roundworms (Toxocara canis) in dogs, sarcoptic mange and other biting lice infestations.

Directions of Use for Stronghold Treatment

Stronghold for dogs should be given in monthly intervals through the flea and tick season, beginning one month before fleas become active.  To treat heartworm, Stronghold may be given to dogs at any time of the year within one month of the animal's first exposure to mosquitoes, and monthly thereafter.

To administer the correct dose of Stronghold, remove the tube from its protective packaging, and holding the tube upright, puncture the applicator seal and remove the cap.

Part your dog's hair at the base of the dog's neck in front of the shouler blades (where it cannot lick), and expose an area of skin.

Apply the Stronghold directly to your dog's skin, squeezing the contents of the tube to one spot.  Do not massage the medication into your dog's skin.

Safety Advice

Stronghold for dogs should only be administered externally only, and should not be given orally.  Do not use on dogs that are less than 6 weeks of age.

Ensure that your dog's coat is not wet when administering Stronghold, and keep treated dogs away from a source of ignition for at least half an hour following treatment.

Ensure that children are kept away from treated animals for at least half an hour, or until the dog's coat is dry.

Wash hands thoroughly following treatment, and avoid contact with skin if you have a known allergy to this product or if you have sensitive skin.

Store the product in temperatures below 30 degrees celcius in a dry place.

Stronghold Side Effects

Temporary clumping of hair at the application site may occur, as may the appearance of white powder, which will disappear within 24 hours after treatment.

Some neurological signs have been observed after use of Stronghold.

Flea and tick product comparison

Fleas are extremely irritating insects to your pet dog.  Biting your pet more than 400 times per day, fleas can consume as much of your dog's blood than it's own body weight.  As well as being a nuisance to dogs, they can also be dangerous - constant feeding on your dog's blood can lead to anemia, and in some cases the death of your dog, so it's worth getting fleas treated as soon as possible, with regular checks made throughout the warmer months of the year.

There are many flea and tick treatments available for your dog. Some treatments come in the form of topical spot ons, others in tablet form or collars.

When choosing the most appropriate flea and tick product for your dog, consult the chart below to see which products treat different types of flea/tick infestation, such as flea egg, larvae, flea allergy dermatitis etc.

Kiltix Tick Collars for dogs are also recommended as a fast acting, long-term tick control to keep them at bay.  Tick collars contain the active ingredient flumethrin which is highly effective against ticks by releasing it as a fine powder and distributed around your dog's body as it moves.

Kiltix Tick Collars will also repel ticks before they have chance to attach to your dog, known as the 'hot foot' effect.  These are available at fantastic prices over at our website - see Kiltix Tick Collar page.

As with any pet health product, remember to always consult your own veterinarian surgeon who will recommend the most suitable flea and tick treatment based on his knowledge of your dog and it's history of health.
